How to start a thesis writing?

The bachelor’s thesis organizes a start-up event for the thesis, which can be an info or a start-up seminar. The student participates in the information session of the thesis.

Choice of subject

The student will independently acquire the thesis topic. The thesis can be based on studying something that is of interest to a student. The thesis may also relate to, for example, a development and experiment project, product development work, event organization, artistic output, training project or production of learning material. The topics can be obtained as commissioned by companies and other organizations and from the TKI projects of the Lapland AMK.

The subject of the thesis must be essentially related to the student’s studies, current or future work or other stakeholder. The aim of the thesis is to develop the student’s ability to apply research data and to use selected methods for analyzing and solving problems in working life, as well as readiness for independent demanding expert work.

The choice of subject and perspective is facilitated by following the English and foreign discussions in the field from literature, scientific journals, TV, radio, web pages. Searching for the topic of the thesis is assisted by literary searches from libraries’ databases, discussion with teachers, and an examination of the research or development needs of the internships.

Creating Idea Paper

The student draws up a written picture of his thesis, ie completes the idea paper. The student delivers the idea paper to the person responsible for the thesis by filing it in the Moodle thesis environment.

Approval of subject and nomination of supervisor

The supervisor of the thesis accepts the student’s idea paper and attaches one or more supervisors to the thesis. In commissioning and project studies, the co-operation organization may also appoint a supervisor for the work.

The student gets a start-up permit for his / her work and a possible study-specific research / work permit. When approving the subject of the thesis, it is ensured that the student has sufficient conditions to do the work.

Projecting and commissioning of the thesis

A thesis is a project if it meets at least one of the following criteria:

  1. Working life pays either to the polytechnic or to the student to do the job and this has been agreed in writing before the thesis begins.
  2. The nominated representative of working life participates in the supervision of the thesis and has been agreed in writing before starting the thesis.
  3. The purpose of the work community is to utilize the results of the thesis in its own activities from the outset and this has been agreed in writing before starting the thesis.

Reports

The written report of the thesis is prepared on the model of the polytechnic in accordance with the instructions given therein.

It is advisable to start writing the report at the beginning of the thesis and work on the text throughout the process. A good result requires editing the text, so it is good to reserve enough time to finalize the report.

The structure of a good thesis report is clear and its text is consistently progressive, accurate and understandable. Particular attention should be paid to the fact that the arguments and opinions of the text have been carefully justified.

The text of the thesis report is the author’s own text, in which the author can refer to the ideas of others by indicating the source with a reference to the source. Direct copying of text is plagiarism that is not allowed. All theses are checked with the Urkund system, which recognizes plagiarism by searching reports similar to the texts submitted to the system. Training-specific instructions on how to use Urkund are given in Moodle’s training thesis sites.

Thesis language control

The student receives guidance from the supervisor of the thesis and from the English teacher. The thesis language instruction-specific instructions are in the Moodle environments of the Bachelor’s study course.

Oral presentation of the thesis

Students present their thesis orally at an event where there is a supervisor, possibly a sponsor and students. The presentation will be held when the supervisor has approved the thesis.

In the introduction, the author of the thesis tells the aims, methods and key results of his / her work using appropriate visualization tools. After the presentation, the participants submit comments or questions to the author.

The presentation event is chaired by the supervisor or the leader of the group-specific seminar. The sponsor of the thesis is polite to invite to the presentation, which is also an excellent opportunity to get publicity for the thesis, for example by inviting external listeners.

2 Thesis

The aim of the thesis is to develop and demonstrate the student’s abilities to apply his / her knowledge and skills in a practical expert-related task.

Grow as an expert

The aim of the thesis is to solve the problem from the field of working life. It can be a development task, planning, product development, applied research or project work.

The purpose of the thesis is to serve as a bridge between study and working life in the Bachelor’s degree, to facilitate the student’s transition to working life and to help the student to establish connections with the operating environment and culture of his / her field. The aim of the Master’s Degree is to create, produce and develop skills for the needs of developing the working life and society of the region.
